+ Positives

  • The VS229H-P uses an e-IPS panel and in this case the "e" really means economical. The display is available for just $140, a bargain considering lower end TN displays of this size are similar in price.
  • Matte AG coating dramatically reduces glare in a brightly lit room or under direct sunlight.
  • Very high contrast ratio for an IPS monitor (measured over 1,000:1 static), especially one in this price range.
  • Low response time and input lag isn't and issue. Could be used as a gaming monitor if you must have IPS, but won't compare to fast TN panels for motion.
  • It's an IPS based model, so of course there are no problems with viewing angles. They are wide and suffer little to no viewing issues from extreme angles.
  • Two digital inputs (HDMI and DVI) and one analog (VGA) offers solid connectivity for multiple devices.
  • Build quality is good. The stand is built solidly and it isn't and eye sore like some you will find in this price range.

- Negatives

  • Stand offers very little adjustability. Only tilt. No swivel, height adjust or pivot. Fortunately, the monitor is VESA compatible.
  • Backlight bleeding seems to be a widespread issue with the VS229H-P. This will vary for each display, but don't expect perfect panel uniformity.
  • Uses PWM for backlight dimming when not set to 100% brightness, and it runs at a really low frequency (around 240Hz). Will cause problems for users sensitive to PWM flicker.

Final Thoughts On The VS229H-P e-IPS Monitor

Why would you buy this monitor? It's cheap. REALLY cheap. Currently priced around $140 at most retailers, which is about the same price as similar 22" TN based displays. I don't expect many PC enthusiasts or hardcore gamers will be flocking to this monitor, but as a secondary display or just a budget monitor for the less technically inclined the VS229H-P offers outstanding value for the money if you just need a quality monitor with wide viewing angles for very little money. The biggest turn off for me is the extreme usage of PWM, but if that doesn't bother you the VS229H-P makes a great solution for low budget builds.
